Otter Brewery

In early September the brewery was voted the South West's 'Rural Business of the Year.'

We were shortlisted in one of the 10 categories at the Western Morning News' inaugural 2014 Countryside Awards.

These have been set up to reward the hard work and skill of the region's farmers, conservationists and rural business leaders.

In the most hotly contested category of the evening, we were shortlisted against Running Deer CIC, The Sign Maker and Bosinver Holiday Cottages.

One of the biggest cheers of the night was reserved for Somerset farmer John Hebditch, who was named Rural Champion of the Year for his work helping others through the appalling winter floods that put much of the prime farmland of the county under water.

WMN Editor Bill Martin told the 200 guests at the St Mellion International Resort, near Saltash, that the rural community was sometimes shy about shouting about its achievements. "But there is plenty to shout about," he told them.

He said: "That is why the Western Morning News is proud to champion the rural Westcountry. We stand squarely alongside rural communities on the issues they care about and if need be we will bang on the door of number 10. Last week I was at Defra meeting the new Secretary of State for the Environment and putting the Westcountry's case forward."

We certainly came away feeling very proud to be counted as one of the champions of the countryside.
